We finally did it! We've said for two or three years we wanted ducks and this weekend we decided to take the pluge and go for it. The slug population has got particularly bad this year and I'm under seige, so in the absence of Fred the frog (who appears to be happy next door and has not returned to his bucket of stinking goo) these two new slug fighters will make all the difference. And as one permaculture guru once said: "You don't have a slug problem, you have a duck deficiency."
Like our other birds, Hinge and Bracket (named in honour of 1970s stage personalites Dr Evadne Hinge and Dame Hilda Bracket) arrived with no idea what grass was and are currently trying to figure out what it is and what you do with it.
They've figured out that the trug is the same as the one in the pen at the poultry centre and have been washing their heads. Indian Runners at minimum need a trug of clean water to wash their eyes several times a day.
Dusty is mortally offended and has been screaming non-stop for over an hour now. I've put some grain down and she's still screaming but with her mouth full, which has muffled the noise a bit.
If they all settle down together, we may look at getting a couple more ducks in a couple of weeks.
