We interrupt our usual schedule to bring you a serious political message about ID cards and the security of your data.
Last week, I ordered a T-shirt from NO2ID that lets the world know exactly how I feel about ID cards.
I do not believe in them, do not agree with the government insistence we need them to protect us and cannot for the life of me fathom why they would think they could protect us from terrorism when the government finally admitted there are around 1.5million illegal immigrants in this country already. Combined with the knowledge of the hash that's been made of the Child Support Agency computer systems (massively over budget and the software doesn't do what is required. Oops!!) I have no faith that the Government could set up an efficient effective system of anything that would work.
So it should come as no surprise to discover that some numpty in the Government's HM Treasury caused the loss of 25 million people's personal details who are in receipt of child benefit. Lots and lots of lovely prime security information relating to banks details, dates of birth, National Insurance numbers etc etc all now in the hands of the highest criminal bidders.
Fan-bloody-tastic.
Doesn't take a genius to figure out how to easily steal someone's identity. Take one criminal who buys "an identity" off the disc. With the address they can find your house, rifle through your rubbish, remove any paperwork or bills you don't shred (or worse break in while you're out and take what they need) and then set up a seperate identity. All you need is a lax employee in charge of checking security details and someone's got away with it. Every so often when I phone my bank I don't get asked my security details (how bad is that!) and I'm given all sorts of information with no checks to see who I am.
This Government has persistently cut corners, added layers and layers of useless middle management to every government-owned institution until the wave of mistakes and bad management has engulfed them. This is a prime example.
I'm using this blog post to go on record as a Coscientious Objector to ID cards and DNA typing. I appreciate that usually the term is used for people who object to participation in all forms of war, and whose belief is based on a religious, moral, or ethical belief system, but in this instance I think the use of the term should be widened.
I will not have an ID card. I will not be DNA typed.
If that means I face court summons, a criminal record or prison so be it.
Sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe in, no matter what the personal cost. This is my country and my elected officials have let me down repeatedly and seem to work to serve themselves, not us. We are being pushed into smaller and smaller pigeonholes and prevented from leading happy, productive, fullfilling lives because we must fill the Goverment coffers to fight wars over the last few barrels of oil and support ministers and organisations that can't or won't do their jobs.
The tide is turning.
You go girl!!! :-)
